Have your say on council rent levels for 2027-28
Published: Monday 19 October 2026
The council wants to hear tenant’s views on the proposed council rent increase for 2027-28 through its annual rent setting consultation programme.
The Budget Scrutiny Group (BSG), which includes tenant representatives from throughout South Lanarkshire alongside council officers, has continued its involvement in developing this year's rent consultation arrangements.
The consultation programme began earlier this month with a joint meeting of the Tenant Participation Co-ordination Group, the BSG and senior council officers. The meeting provided the opportunity for discussions to take place on the key considerations behind the proposed rent increase, affordability for tenants and the council's long-term financial planning.
There will be a range of opportunities for tenants to share their views on the rent increase proposals. This will include in-person and online engagement events, as well as an online rent survey available through the council website and promoted through the council's social media channels.
The consultation will conclude with a tenant-led event on 10th December 2026 at Hamilton Town House, organised by the South Lanarkshire Tenant Development Support Project. The event will provide tenants with an opportunity to explore the issues affecting the proposed rent increase and express their opinions before a final decision is made.
Tenant representative of the BSG, Sam Hewitt highlighted the importance of getting involved:
"Household costs remain challenging for many people, which is why it is important that tenants take part in this year’s consultation and share their views on the proposed rent increase."
All comments and feedback received during the consultation will be compiled into a report for consideration by Housing and Technical Resources Committee in early 2027, when approval for the rent increase will be sought.
For further information or to take part, visit www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk or follow the council's social media channels. Tenants wishing to attend the closing event can contact the South Lanarkshire Tenant Development Support Project.
